Megan's Work Experience Journey

Written by Megan

Today I went to Petra jewellery for a days work experience. As soon as I arrived I knew it was going to be a great day. The team were so friendly and welcoming and I had an action packed day planned.

I started in production with Jo where I learned lots about jewellery and how to work out the size of a ring.

Rosie then gave me a masterclass in design where I got to create my own design which I would later get to make.

Next job, creating the design. I was sent to Behzad the goldsmith who I think is a miracle worker. He taught me how to cut and create my own wax design.  I chose to do a hockey stick as it is my favourite sport.

Next I had a go at filing it then Behzad went over it to make it perfect. Now it was time to cast. Seeing my design come to life was exciting and helped me understand how sand casting works.

I spent some time chatting with Abi, looking at past designs and the backstory’s that inspired them.

Then I went back to the workshop where I watched Behzad make my design look beautiful, allowing me to get hands on with the sandpaper. After a lot more polishing, filing and laser soldering he added the chain.

The finished necklace looks amazing and far better than I’d hoped for! Thank you so much to everyone  at Petra for this amazing day. I hope to see you all again soon.
