How do you resize a ring?
If you have a ring that no longer fits, you’re not alone. Fingers naturally change over time, and it’s very common for rings to feel too tight, too loose, or simply not quite right for you anymore.
The good news is that many rings can be resized safely by a skilled goldsmith. However, the answer isn’t always straightforward. Some rings resize easily, while others require specialist solutions or, in some cases, might benefit from a restoration or remodel.
In this guide, we’ll explain how ring resizing works, what affects whether a ring can be resized, typical costs, and when it might not be worth doing. Our aim is simply to help you understand your options before making a decision.

Pregnancy
Arthritis or joint swelling
Changes in lifestyle or activity levels
Rings being inherited or gifted in the wrong size
Sometimes a ring only needs a very small adjustment to become comfortable again, but it’s best to have a professional jeweller assess how much of an adjustment needs to be made.
How do we make a ring larger?
To increase the size, the band is carefully cut and a small piece of metal of the same carat is added. The ring is then reshaped, soldered and polished so the solder join is invisible.
How do we make a ring smaller?
To reduce the size, a small section of the band is removed either by cutting or filing depending on how many sizes it needs to be reduced by. The ring is then joined back together, reshaped and polished.
What kind of rings can be resized?
Most engagement rings, plain wedding bands, half-set gemstone rings, and those made from gold, platinum or silver can usually be resized safely thanks to having enough plain metal in the band.
What kind of rings can be more difficult to resize?
Engraved rings
We need to be mindful of patterns and details, sometimes we may need to re-engrave the details,
Full eternity rings
Full coverage stone set rings usually require more labour and can be a bit riskier to the setting and stones.
Titanium + Tungsten rings
Require a specialist metal smith and typically cannot be resized, usually we would advise purchasing a new band in the correct size.
Tension-set rings
This style of ring is incredibly challenging to work with, particularly if it needs sizing down. Due to the nature of the setting, even relatively straightforward work can become much more complex and carries a greater level of risk.
.
In some situations, resizing might not be the best option such as when…
The band is extremely thin or worn
If a ring has worn down over time, resizing it can weaken the structure further. We may then suggest to re-building the shank with more metal.
The ring needs to change by several sizes
Large adjustments can distort the design or stone settings so we may suggest remodelling the ring into a new design
The cost of resizing is more than remaking the ring
In some cases, remodelling the ring may be a better long-term solution.
The ring has stones all the way around the band
Full eternity rings often cannot be resized without removing stones.
