How Much Gold Do I Need?
We hear this question all the time: “Do I have enough metal for my bespoke or remodelled piece?” It’s tricky to give an exact answer without seeing your pieces, weighing your metal, or sketching out a design to get a quote from our goldsmith.
But we can give you a helpful guide based on some of our most popular Petra pieces.
Engagement Rings
For these, we usually need 10–14g of gold. Even for daintier styles, having a little extra ensures we can shape and form the perfect ring without compromise.
Wedding Bands
The weight depends on the size and width, but typically 6–10g is a good starting point.
Signet Rings
These are made using an ancient casting technique. We might use 15–25g of gold in the process, though the finished piece usually weighs 12–15g.
Pendants
The amount of gold depends on the design. For flat, sheet-style pendants, we usually need 10–15g. For stone-set pendants, around 5–7g will do. Earrings follow similar principles to pendants.
Bangles
Our standard Petra toque bangles require 25–30g+, while hinged bangles, which need extra metal for durability, usually require 30–35g+.
How Can You Know How Much Gold You Have?
We love sitting down with clients and weighing everything together. We’ll check for any solder, impurities, or stones that might add weight and advise you on what will work best.
