Laboratory vs Natural Diamonds: What’s the Difference?
Traditionally, natural diamonds have been the go to choice for engagement rings. However, in recent years, advances in science and technology have made laboratory grown diamonds an increasingly popular option.
One of the most common questions we’re asked is: what is the difference?
It’s a great question and one we often answer with a simple comparison: would you prefer ice from a freezer or ice from a glacier? One has formed naturally over thousands of years, while the other is created by human hands. Chemically, they are the same. The difference lies in their journey.
Is there a visible difference?
In short, it’s hard to tell with the naked eye.
Laboratory grown diamonds are optically, chemically and physically the same as natural diamonds. Both can contain inclusions and imperfections, and in many cases, even trained jewellers need specialist equipment to tell them apart.
That said, certain types of inclusions are more typical in natural diamonds, while laboratory grown stones may show different growth patterns depending on how they are created.
How are diamonds formed?
Natural diamonds
Natural diamonds formed deep within the Earth around one to three billion years ago, under extreme heat and pressure. They are brought closer to the surface through volcanic activity, where they are eventually mined.
Laboratory grown diamonds
Laboratory grown diamonds are created using advanced technology that replicates these natural conditions. The two main methods are:
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): mimics the natural formation process using intense heat and pressure
CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition): grows a diamond layer by layer from carbon rich gas
These processes typically take a few weeks to a few months.
The cost difference
One of the biggest differences is price.
Natural diamonds are rarer, which contributes to their value and long term desirability. Laboratory grown diamonds are more accessible, often costing significantly less for the same size and appearance.
So if you’ve always dreamed of a larger diamond, for example a 2ct stone, but it feels out of reach with a natural diamond, a laboratory grown option can be a practical and beautiful alternative.
At Petra Jewellery, we always focus on giving honest advice based on what matters most to you, whether that is size, symbolism, or long term value.
Are laboratory grown diamonds more environmentally friendly?
This is a nuanced topic.
Laboratory grown diamonds avoid the need for mining, but they do require a significant amount of energy to produce. The environmental impact depends heavily on how that energy is generated.
Natural diamonds, on the other hand, involve mining, but when responsibly sourced, they follow strict ethical and environmental standards with companies required to follow environmental guidance and restore mined areas once the mining is completed.
At Petra Jewellery, our natural diamonds are GIA certified and sourced in line with the Kimberley Process, ensuring they are conflict free and responsibly obtained. We also prioritise working with trusted suppliers and offer recycled metals as part of our commitment to sustainability.
So, which should you choose?
There is no right or wrong answer, only what feels right for you.
Some of our customers love the heritage and story behind a natural diamond. Others prefer the accessibility and value of a laboratory grown stone. Many simply want the most beautiful option within their budget.
