Tara's oval sapphire engagement ring
Tara and I have been friends for over 20 years now so of course she had told me all about her dream engagement ring so that when the time came, we would be ready…
Her partner, Josh, got in touch with me to start the process. He’d never done anything like it before but knew he wanted to have the perfect bespoke ring made to pop the question.

From all the conversations and the photos that i’d seen, I had a rough idea of what Tara would want and luckily so did Josh!
Her brief was an oval blue stone with smaller shaped diamonds sat either side. She also knew that she wanted a white metal as it suited her better and all of her special pieces of jewellery were white.

It took a while for Josh and I to find the perfect shade of blue, nothing too dark and nothing too pale. We looked at aquamarines, sapphires and tourmalines.
Luckily, at Petra Jewellery, we have access to some fantastic one-of-a-kind selections of gemstones through our lovely gemstone suppliers so we were able to pick a few options and narrow them down.
We wanted to make sure that, as well as the colour being right, this stone was going to stand the test of time and be hard wearing enough to be worn every day.
Eventually, we came across a beautiful Sri Lankan blue sapphire and Josh knew it was perfect.

We’d also had a conversations about the design of the ring and together came up with a few initial ideas and tweaked the design until it was perfect.
Once we had the stones and our design, we got a CAD made…
Josh wanted to add a few personal touches to make the ring special including a star and moon detail in the gallery and an engraved message on the inside of the ring.
Then it was time for us to make the ring! This usually takes around 6-8 weeks so that we can make the mount, then it gets hallmarked so that you know what metal it is, then the stones are meticulously set and the final piece is given a check and a polish.
Then it was time to let Josh know that he could come and pick up the ring…he was a little bit nervous!
But because of all the care and thought he’d put into it…it was perfect and of course Tara said yes!
